BHARATI KRISHNA TIRTHA SWAMIGAL

INTRODUCTION

Jagadguru  Bharatikrishna Tirtha Swamigal (1884- 1960) was served as the pontiff of Govardhana mutt in Puri, Odisha, from 1925 to 1960. He is a great saint and he was appreciated for his spiritual powers. His birth name was Venkataraman.

Venkataraman Shastri was born in the year 1884 to a noble Brahmin family. His father served as a Deputy Collector in Madras Presidency.

Venkataraman studied in Madras University in the year 1899, and he scored good marks in the exams, and he was considered as the best student among the teachers.

Venkataraman learnt Sanskrit in Madras Sanskrit Association and he was properly guided by his Sanskrit guru Sri Vedam Shastri.

Venkataraman also finished B.A and M.A., and for some time, he worked under Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and in the year 1908, he joined the Sringeri Mutt in Mysore and studied Vedas and other Hindu Holy Scriptures under Sri Sachitananda Mahaswamigal.

During his studies, he learnt various Sadhanas, meditation and yoga under his guru and due to that, he had attained great spiritual knowledge at Sringeri Mutt. He delivered divine lectures on Adi Sankara’s Advaita Vedanta philosophies among the people, and insisted them to worship Lord Shiva by chanting the “OM NAMAH SHIVAYA” mantra throughout their life.

After studying Vedanta for a few years, he has become a saint in the year 1919, and he was known as “Swami Bharatikrishna Tirtha”.

Swami Bharatikrishna Tirtha, taught divine subjects to his disciple, Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal.

In the year 1925, Bharatikrishna had become the pontiff of the Govardhana Mutt.

Bharatikrishna travelled to various foreign countries and promoted the Hindu Sanatana Dharma by giving divine lectures amongst the people.  He wrote large number of books on Hinduism and social issues.

He sincerely served as the holy pontiff of Govardhana Mutt until his death in the year 1960.
