About

Founded in 1923 by Divine inspiration to propagate the Gita. Gita Press is a unit of Gobind Bhawan Karyalaya registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (presently governed by the West Bengal Societies Act, 1960).

The institution’s main objective is to promote and spread the principles of Sanatana Dharma, the Hindu religion among the general public by publishing Gita, Ramayana, Upanishads, Puranas, Discourses of eminent Saints and other character-building books & magazines and marketing them at highly subsidised prices.

The institution strives for the betterment of life and the well-being of all. It aims to promote the art of living as propounded in the Gita for peace & happiness and the ultimate upliftment of mankind. The founder, Brahmalina Shri Jayadayalji Goyandka, was a staunch devotee and an exalted soul. He was much given to the Gita as the panacea for mankind’s plight and began publishing it and other Hindu scriptures to spread good intent and good thought amongst all.

The Governing Council (Trust Board) manages the institution. Its members (Trustees) have no selfish or monetary motive. The institution neither solicits donations nor accepts advertisements in its publications. The deficit is met by the surplus from other departments of the society which render services at reasonable cost, in accordance with the objects of the society.

In the Gita Press, the day starts with a morning prayer. A person roams around throughout the day to remind the name of God to each worker several times. Over the years, the institution has made available more than 370 million copies of the Gita, Ramayan, Bhagvat, Durga Saptashati, Puranas, Upanishads, Bhakta-Gathas, and other character-building books in Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Bangla, Oriya, Telugu, Kannada, and other Indian regional languages.

The “Kalyan” in Hindi and the “Kalyana-Kalpataru” in English are monthly magazines brought out by the institution. Information about latest releases, and essays are provided in the house-magazine “Yug Kalyan”. Nityalilalina Bhaiji Shri Hanuprasadji Poddar is especially remembered as the life-time editor of the Kalyan monthly magazine.

Research Library

The Gita Press maintains a library of Hindu Religious books on its premises. This library contains old and rare copies of the Gita with commentaries in various languages which are displayed every year on Gita Jayanati Day in the Art Gallery. Other rare scriptures are also available.

The Art Gallery (Lila Chitra Mandir)

The Gita Press endeavors to publish only such illustrations of God as are painted by devoted artists based on descriptions provided in ancient Scriptures or as realised by Saints. To this end, a large collection of paintings got prepared by great Indian artists are on display in the Art Gallery.

The Art Gallery (Lila Chitra Mandir) depicts the Lilas of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna in 684 beautiful paintings arranged sequentially for each from birth to end. These are compositions of great artists of different times. Apart from these, a number of other paintings are on display. A set of 92 old Mewari style paintings depicting Sri Krishna Lila are commendable. The complete Gita is inscribed on marble blocks on the walls, as also about 700 couplets and verses of exalted saints.

In the large hall of this Art Gallery, a rare collection of various volumes of Srimad Bhagvad Gita and other ancient scriptures from the research library are exhibited on special occasions like Gita Jayanti day (the day on which Lord Krishna pronounced the Gita).

Magazines

“Kalyan” (Hindi), “Kalyana Kalpataru” (English)

“Kalyan” (Hindi) and “Kalyana-Kalpataru” (English) are monthly magazines devoted to the betterment of life and the well-being of all. One would gain spiritually from these magazines. Topics like devotion, knowledge, yoga, dharma, detachment, spirituality, meditation, true motive, good thought, good action, etc. are covered in them. Special numbers covering an uplifting topic or a scripture are brought out yearly.

The “Kalyan” (Hindi) is being published since 1927, the first issue, brought out in January each year, is a special number devoted to a particular subject. In the past, Hindi translations of a number of Puranas have been published as special issues.

“Kalyan” contains articles by old and contemporary, eminent Indian saints and scholars. Besides there are special columns like – “Read, Understand and Do”, “To Think About”, etc. It has approximately 2,50,000 subscribers.

The “Kalyana-Kalpataru” (English), started in 1934, has its subscription year from October to September. Articles of various saints and scholars are incorporated into this magazine.

The in-house magazine “Yug-Kalyan” provides information about latest releases, price-list changes, and announcements of the Press. This is especially useful for book-sellers. In addition, it contains short, useful material for self-upliftment.
