KING SAMVARANA
INTRODUCTION
Samvarana was the ruler of the Hastinapura kingdom and he was mentioned in the Mahabharata. His father was Riksha, and his consort was Tapati, daughter of Lord Surya, and their son was Kuru.
Once, the kingdom of Hastinapura was affected by severe storm and drought, and as a result the King Samvarana performed Yagnas with the help of his Guru and priest Rishi Vasishtha, and due to that, the climatic conditions were become normal, and king Samvarana also attained great powers.
It is believed that king Samvarana was an ardent devotee of Lord Surya. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Surya had married his daughter Tapati to Samvarana. King Samvarana was considered as a very brave and a noble king, and due to his valour, and with the powerful weapons given by his father-in-law, Surya, he has expanded his kingdom.
Being the son-in-law of Lord Surya, he used to occasionally visit Surya Loka also. He is described in the Mahabharata, as the king with golden hands. Similar to Karna, he used to regularly donate wealth to the people, and also opened food shelters at various places in his kingdom. Due to his holiness, the divine devas in the heaven praised him and also offered various boons to him.
After successfully ruling his kingdom for many years, at his old age, he crowned his son Kuru as the king of Hastinapura, and he went to the Himalayas, and performed meditation on Lord Vishnu, and after his death, he reached the abode of Lord Indra, the Swarka Loka.
His son Kuru was also a great ruler, and he successfully ruled his kingdom for many years, and his descendants are the powerful Pandavas. Rishi Veda Vyasa narrated the story of Samvarana to the Pandavas.
