INDRA BHAGAVAN TEMPLE AT WAGHADI, MAHARASHTRA
INTRODUCTION
Among few temples dedicated to Lord Indra, there is a famous Indra temple situated in Waghadi at Maharashtra, and it is located on a hill. This temple was built by the local villagers when they faced a severe drought and famine at this place. Since Lord Indra is the god of rain, villagers prayed to him and built this temple.
After the construction of this temple, and performance of puja to Lord Indra Bhagavan, there was a heavy rain, and due to that, good cultivation takes place, and as a result the farmers were very happy, and from then onwards, grand puja would be conducted during the December – January month, and at that time, Lord Indra would be decorated with golden ornaments, and he looks like a bright sun. Though Lord Indra is not worshipped by Hindus, it is suggested to worship him regularly, since he is the god of the heavens and also a chief Vedic deity, contains great powers, and also occupies the position next to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In ancient times, people would worship him, similar to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. But in course of time, people began to worship mainly Lord Shiva and Vishnu, and began to ignore the Vedic deities such as Lord Brahma, Lord Surya and Lord Indra.
At this current situation, after our death, reaching the abode of Lord Indra, the Indra Loka, is very difficult, since every day, whether knowingly or unknowingly, we are committing lot of mistakes in our life. By worshipping Lord Indra, we would get goodness in our lives, and also we would have an opportunity to live in the Indra Loka, after our death.
Hence let us visit the famous temple of Lord Indra at Waghadi, at least once in our life time and be blessed.
