Introduction
Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peeth (VVM) is the umbrella organization under which various service projects of the Art of Living Foundation in India operate. In addition to rural development programs, women’s empowerment projects and educational initiatives, VVM is also involved in Vedic research, medical research and social research.
Women face many social challenges in the current day and age. Whether it be securing an income for her family or raising children amidst the harsh economic crisis, a woman plays many roles.. Women are often over-worked and women’s rights are still very much an issue in many parts of the world. In India, women are forced to use fields and open spaces for defecation and have had to withstand chronic health problems due to the lack of toilet facilities.
VVMVP empowers women to face challenges by providing tools and techniques that help to eliminate individual stress. A sense of community spirit is created that allows women to face similar challenges as a team rather than individually. The Art of Living encourages women to find practical solutions to their challenges so that each one becomes self-dependent in their own right.
The Art of Living started their service initiatives by providing education to underprivileged rural children in Udayapura Village on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Today, The Art of Living’s Schools provide holistic free education to over 24,000 students in 185 schools across 20 states of India in the slum, tribal and rural belts where child labor and poverty are widespread.
Inspired by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s vision of value education for all, these schools impart education integrated with values.
Aims:
- Access to quality education to the children of underprivileged, rural, tribal and remote sections of society
- Ensure completion of education with an opportunity to be self sufficient
- Build community partnerships
- Address the social, economic and cultural barriers that keep children away from school
