Belur houses the ancient temples of the Hoysala Empire and is located in Hassan district at a distance of about 222 km from Bangalore in Karnataka. The main temple in Belur is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and called the Chennakesava Temple in praise of the beauty of Lord Vishnu as Chennakesava literally means “Handsome Vishnu’. The intricate and refined temple carvings are testimony to the detailed craftsmanship of the sculptors belonging to the Hoysala style of architecture. It’s no wonder then that the temple took about 103 years to get fully constructed.
