Introduction
The Himalayan Institute is a premier training institute for Yoga, Meditation and Spirituality. Sri Swami Rama of the Himalayas envisaged spreading the idea of holistic health and built the Institute in the year 1970. He took the initiative of finding out and embracing the sacred link connecting the East with the West.
The Himalayan institute captures the essence of holistic health by linking ancient wisdom with modern technology. Swami Rama strongly believed that spirituality is an indivisible part of science, and this combination is vital in the process of self-transformation.
The wisdom of the Himalayan tradition is promoted and propagated here through various research and publication works on Yoga, Meditation, and Spirituality. The Institute headquarters is located in Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh). Located on a 30 acre land, the nerve centre is indeed a spiritual retreat standing on the banks of the River Ganga.
The Institute also believes in serving humanity and is aggressively involved in many grass-root level humanitarian activities. Various projects in the field of education also include free schools in villages, a sponsored Sanskrit college, and educational scholarships to lower class working students. The Institute has also taken initiatives in community tree plantation, organic farming training for peasants and environment management projects in Karnataka.
About Sri Swami Rama
Swami Rama was one of the greatest intellects of the 20th century. He was an eminent writer, educator and philanthropist. Swami Rama was a North Indian and was raised under the guardianship of a highly spiritual Himalayan sage, Bengali Baba. During his growing years, Swami Rama visited innumerable monasteries. He was highly fortunate to have received his training under highly revered Himalayan sages. As per the records, Swami Rama had met his grandmaster in a remote Tibetan region during his early days of wandering as a spiritual seeker. Later, Swami Rama also gained his higher education in various European nations.
At a very early age, Swami Rama earned fame as a master of holistic healing. However, the year 1949 was a benchmark of his career as he was consecrated as Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham in South India. He upheld the prestigious position from 1949 to 1952 and thereafter he returned to his Himalayan monastery to learn advanced lessons from his grandmaster. After mastering the art of Yoga and Meditation, he arrived at United States in the year 1969 to set up the Himalayan Institute.
In his famous text, Living With the Himalayan Masters, Swami Rama has broadened every possible facet of healthy and holistic healing while demonstrating his art as the living tradition of the East.
Pandit Tigunait
The present and immediate successor of the Swami Rama is Pandit Tigunait. As a spiritual head, he is actively involved in disseminating the teachings of his master worldwide since 25 years. He was ordained as the spiritual head of the Himalayan Institute in the year 1976. Since then, has been incessantly preaching the divine vision laid by the Himalayan masters in ancient India.

Publications
The Institute is rigorously involved in disseminating the ancient spiritual wisdom through its official membership magazine called Yoga International (YI). The magazine was launched by Swami Rama in 1991 as a trusted authentic voice of Yoga. Since then, YI is informing, inspiring, and empowering its readers and helping them in leading a meaningful life. YI stands out amongst other similar publications as it rises above the applications of physical Yoga and focuses intensively on the conscious living of its readers.
It delves deeply into each and every aspect of conscious living through self-transformation and humanitarian policies. YI has been honored with several international publishing awards; the most prominent amongst those are three gold Folio Awards won for its editorial excellence.
