Introduction

The concept of a Swadeshi Science Movement was conceived in 1982 at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, under the leadership of Prof. K.I Vasu. They celebrated November 7th, the birthday of Sir. C.V. Raman as swadeshi science day. After long 8 years of birth pangs on December 19, 1990, some scientists, technologists and social workers met at Bangalore and gave an organizational frame work. In 1991, (October 20-21), at the Nagpur meet, it was decided to launch the Swadeshi Science Movement at All India Level and named it as Vijnana Bharati. A broad objective and action plan for the organization have been made and discussed in detail there. This meeting became a turning point in the history of Vijnana Bharati.

The Nagpur meet was attended by 75 intellectuals from ten states of the country participated. The four Southern States and the states of U.P, M.P, Haryana, West Bengal and Delhi were represented. So also were the different scientific disciplines and technical specialties. There were general sessions and also group discussions for comprehending the role of S & T in our nation building. Five different groups belonging to Materials sciences, Health sciences, Bio-sciences, Social sciences and Education, discussed on various relevant issues. Particularly, they considered the possibility and practicality of indigenization in various S & T fields. Consensus was that this policy is not only patriotic, but also imperative, considering our near-total dependence on the west and the resultant economic drain that is driving us into economic slavery.

India faces critical challenges as a nation in its march towards a welfare state. Considering the nature of the challenges which are so unique, only rapid strides in the sector of science and technology, in resonance with India’s heritage can meet those challenges. In this context Vijnanabharati, a science movement with swadeshi spirit has a greater role to play.

Swadeshi Science Movement was started in Indian Institute of Science- (Bengaluru) by a few eminent scientists under the guidance of Prof. K I Vasu. This movement gradually gained momentum and emerged as an organization with national presence. In 1991(Oct 20-21) at the Nagpur meet, it was decided, to launch the Swadeshi Science Movement at all India Level and named it as Vijnanabharati. The foundation principle of VIBHA is made

Activities

World Ayurveda Congress (WAC)

The largest gathering of its kind for exploring new frontiers in the field of medicine, the World Ayurveda Congresses started in the year 2002 at Kochi, Kerala. Global community actively participate in this Congress with great enthusiasm and high expectations.

WAC attracts people from all disciplines to present their research works related to Ayurveda and allied sciences. Through four World Congresses on Ayurveda, we could create a huge interest for Ayurveda in 46 countries which in turn resulted in making ayurveda acceptable to the global community.

National Ayurveda Students and Youth Association (NASYA)

NASYA, a national movement for Ayurveda was formed on 20th December, 2008 during 3rd World Ayurveda Congress at Jaipur. NASYA was formed to bring students and youths of AYURVEDA together to motivate them to do research, practice and propagate this science throughout their life. Thousands of students and youths from different parts of the country, declared in one voice their wholehearted commitment to spread the mission of NASYA.

Rashtriya Yuva Vaigyanik Manch (RYVM)

This Manch has been created for young scientists, researchers and technocrats of age below 40 years to address the burning issues of the country. Yearly conference of young scientists give wider vision and much understanding about the real problems of Bharat.

Interactive sessions and panel discussions in the young scientists’ conferences gives them nationalist vision and confidence to take Bharat to the new heights.

SHAKTI – The Women Empowerment Movement of Vijnana Bharati

Shakti is an association of women for social empowerment. It has been formed with a great desire and determination of uniting the women force of India for a creative movement. Shakti is based on Indian culture and upholds the sanctity of Indian woman hood.

This organization is heralded in re-awakening the creative potential of women without succumbing to the western culture which is enforced on us as modern thoughts. Shakti urges the women to come out of their shells for the realization of self.  It asks the women to tackle her social challenges boldly, come forward and be a part of the new ‘era of women empowerment and nation building’.

Viswa Veda Vigyan Sammelan (VVVS)

The eternal knowledge of our nation lies in the Vedas and the Upanishads. The great ethics and values we imbibed through generations are from the Puranas and the Epics. The vibrancy and high morale of life existing in our society is not derived from any external source.

The invaluable knowledge and ever relevant systems are totally on scientific basis. VVVS is bringing all those who are working in Vedic literature and traditional knowledge on a common dais to present and discuss. With two such conferences, we could bring out 1200 research papers on Vedic Literature by experts from IITs, IISc and other R & D institutions.

National Environment & Energy Development Mission (NEED Mission)

The objective of the mission is to, foster innovation of technologies, find sustainable solutions on energy and bring together technologists, policy makers, commercial organizations and entrepreneurs to facilitate its implementation. India’s growing energy needs and its reliance on fossil fuel based energy sources is a threat to the energy security of the nation.

International Institute of Waste Management (IIWM)

This is a proud initiative of Vijnana Bharati, established in 5th June 2009 at Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Understanding the deep rooted implications of the waste management and environmental problems of present India, Vijnana Bharati, has come up with this novel institution.

Global Indian Scientists and Technocrats Foundation (GIST)

GIST is an autonomous platform created by Vijnana Bharati to link global Indians with the under privileged (40 crore) masses in the country, mostly residing in more than three lakh villages.GIST was officially launched by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on 26 December 2010 at Pune. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of Dept. of Atomic Energy is the guiding spirit behind this noble vision.

Jnan Vigyan Pratibha Pariksha (JVPP)

Successive dispensations in post independent India failed to recognize the rich scientific history of our nation. These lacunae prompted Vijnanabharati to conduct Jnan Vigyan Pratibha Pareeksha.

In today’s fast changing and competitive world, education based on the prescribed school curricula alone is not sufficient. It has become absolutely necessary to supplement school education with practical knowledge and to nurture creativity in the process of learning. It was with this motive that we started Jnan Vijnan Pratibha Pariksha, which received a huge response from educational and scientific community.

Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan Samiti (BVSS)

When mother tongue and regional languages have no place in science communication, it is difficult for research findings and new innovations to reach masses. In this context Vijnanabharati initiated BVS.

Vigyan Prasar Bharati

To alleviate the pain and suffering confronting a sizable section of our demography, it is very essential to educate the masses about the need to have a rational and scientific approach towards life.

Propagation of the fundamentals and applications of science across India is a challenging task considering the heterogeneous nature of our society.
