Nayinatheevu Swamigal (19th century) was born in Srilanka in a pious Hindu Vellalar family. From his childhood itself, he was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, and used to write songs and sung in front of his temples. His birth name was Muthukumaraswamy. After finishing his basic education, he has joined as a clerk in a Private Company. Though he worked well in the company, once, he got scolded by his superior for committing a small mistake. He immediately left his job, and went home and wrote a letter to his parents stating that he was in search of spirituality and went to India.
After wandering to many places, he finally got a spiritual guru, and become a saint, and he served his guru in a whole heartedly manner, and learned all the spiritual aspects from him. After some time, due to his guru’s instructions, he went back to India, and he didn’t stay in his house, but stayed in temples and mutts, and had his food by taking alms.
In course of time, his name and fame has spread, and people began to gather in front of him and narrated their problems. He gave sacred ash and blessed them. Through his spiritual powers, the people were got relieved from their problems and lived in a prosperous manner. He insisted the people and his devotees to chant the “OM NAMAH SHIVAYA” mantra regularly in order to get relieved from their sins. He lived a noble life and served the people with much affection and attained Mahasamadhi in the year 1949.
