SONGS IN PRAISE OF GURU DATTATREYA BY SANT DAS GOSAVI

INTRODUCTION

Sant Das Gosavi(16^th century AD) was the medieval saint, who was an ardent devotee of Guru Dattatreya, and due to that, he had got the wonderful opportunity of getting the direct darshan of the holy Guru Dattatreya, and he also learned the teachings directly from Dattatreya and written and  sung several songs in praise of his Guru Dattatreya.

Das Gosavi was mentioned in some holy texts of Hinduism, and after meeting his Guru Dattatreya, he lived a very simple life, become a saint, wanders from place to place by singing songs and by spreading the marvellous teachings of Guru Datta. The songs sung by him in praise of his Guru were widely appreciated by the people, and he received a warm welcome from the kings, and it is believed that he also visited holy places like Kashi, Dwaraka, Badrinath and Kedarnath.

The contents present in the wonderful songs are as follows:-

I humbly salute to my Holy Guru Dattatreya who appears with three heads and six hands, who contains a Japa Mala on one hand, and a sacred pot on his another hand, and he is the one who is surrounded by cows and dogs, since he didn’t find partiality between anything present in the world.

My humble salutations to my holy Guru Dattatreya,
Who is an incarnation of the Trimurties, and he is the one who also holds the holy Trident of Lord Shiva, and also holds the Chanku and Chakra of Lord Vishnu.

My humble salutations to Lord Dathatreya,
Who is the master of the entire universe,
and he is the one who relieves us from the chain of repeated birth cycles.

My humble salutations to Lord Dhattatreya,
Who purifies our body and soul,
and he is the one, who shows his abundant mercy on his devotees.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who contains golden colour, shines brightly like the sun, and he is the founder of the holy Vedas.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who is much beyond our imagination, who cannot be destroyed by anyone, and he is the one, who looks like a holy Rishi.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who dwells in the souls of the sages, who likes in performing Yagnas, and he is the one who creates, protects and destroys the universe.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who is very much interested in doing penance, and he is the one who acts as an example for others.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who removes the sensual pleasures from us, and he is the one, who would invoke us in the bhakti path.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
whose beauty cannot be explained in words, and he is the one who looks more beautiful than that of Lord Indra Bhagavan.

My humble salutations to Lord Dattatreya,
Who follows the path of dharma, and he is the one who is considered both as a Rishi as well as a god.

My humble salutations to Lord Dattatreya,
Who protects his devotees from their enemies, and he is the one who follows his devotees like their shadow.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
Who contains great knowledge than that of Lord Brahma, and he is the ultimate Brahman, who holds the entire universe on his two eyes.

My humble salutations to Guru Dattatreya,
who would destroy our sins, and he is the one who would give good knowledge, willpower, courage, boldness and everything to us.

My Humble salutations to my Holy Guru Dattatreya, who removes the illusions, and would destroy our own enemies like lust, anger and greed, and he is the one who would boost lot of spiritual energy to us.

My humble salutations to my Guru Dattatreya, who is considered equivalent to Guru Dakshinamurthy, who is the best among the Rishis and also the best among the gods, and there is no end for him.
