The Varaha cave temples, part of the 4 temple complex located at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu were built in the 7th Century AD. These temples are devoted to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Bhumi. The temples stand testimony to the Vishvakarma Sthapathis who elaborated the Rock- cut cave temples in world architecture. Belonging to the Pallava reign, these beautiful temples are the starting point in the transition of rock architecture from the rock cut cave temples to the freestanding stone architecture. Stone carved temples are prevalent in contemporary Indian architecture. Varaha cave temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
