The Vijayanagara rulers were instrumental in transforming a small shrine into a large temple complex called the Virupaksha temple in the city of Hampi. The largest entrance of the temple is about 50 meters high. The original small shrine was built in 7th century AD and has been functioning uninterruptedly ever since. This is the most unique feature of the Virupaksha temple. This fact makes it one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in India.
